The New Classics

Disneyland is nearly as famous for its food as it is for the rides. For many, Disneyland is their favorite place to get a Dole Whip, a Mickey pretzel, or a Monte Cristo. Today I wanted to touch on some food items that aren’t in that classic category. They aren’t classics yet. They are what we are dubbing “new classics.” Give them a few more years, and they’ll be talked about the same way that the current classics are talked about.

The Pixar Pier Frosty Parfait ($5.99)

The Pixar Pier Frosty Parfait

When Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats opened last May, I had no idea that one of the new classics would emerge. I remember thinking “this better be good” as I waited in the long line last May. Spoiler for the end of the story – it was good. As my daughter and I devoured it that first time I found myself wishing that I had bought two – one for each of us. It was perfection on that blistering hot day. I don’t say that lightly.

This delightful frozen treat is non-dairy lemon soft serve with blue raspberry slush swirled in through the soft serve. The lemon soft serve is delightful (and dairy free so vegans are able to partake also) on its own. The blue raspberry slush is delightful on its own. As they begin melting together, it becomes even more delicious. If you visit Disney California Adventure this summer, make sure you try this one.

The Churro Toffee ($6.49)

Churro Toffee

Disney rarely rolls out new foods quietly, yet that is how churro toffee came onto the scene in November 2018. Without fanfare, during the middle of the festival of holidays celebration, it appeared in the candy case at Trolley Treats. They took a traditional toffee core, dipped it in white chocolate, and then coated it in cinnamon-sugar like a churro. The results are jaw dropping. It is scary how good this treat tastes! We get a piece of churro toffee on just about every trip to the Parks now. We have also seen this treat at Marceline’s Confectionary in the Downtown Disney District. If you don’t have an annual pass or park ticket, you should head to Marceline’s just to buy this item and see for yourself how crazy good it tastes

Loaded Dole Whips & Swirls ($5.69 – $7.99)

Raspberry-Pineapple Swirl (left); Orange-Pineapple Swirl (right)
The Loaded Whip – includes crystallized hibiscus, pineapple, and Pocky sticks in addition to the orange-pineapple swirled Dole whip.

This one might be cheating a little. The traditional Dole Whips (both the floats and the soft-serve) are one of the old classics. In December 2018 Disneyland opened The Tropical Hideaway in Adventureland. We were lucky enough to be there on opening day. Tropical Hideaway added orange and raspberry Dole whip to the traditional option of pineapple swirl. In addition to the new flavor options they added a Loaded Dole Whip (originally called Twisted Ambush) to the menu. We highly recommend all the swirls, floats, and loaded whip(s) from Tropical Hideaway – really tasty stuff! New classics if we do say so ourselves.

Creative Churros (price varies)

The Chocolate Peanut Butter Churro from DCA’s Food & Wine Festival 2019

I don’t remember exactly when it started, but Disneyland has gone all in on the churro craze. You might remember this churro from Pixar Fest last spring/summer:

Or this one celebrating the Rose Gold craze.

Or more recently the Fantasia Mickey Churro:

There are so many other options we could have included from the sour apple churro to the pumpkin spice churro. Among the multitudes of churro options there has never been a better time to be a fan of churros. Fried dough slathered in colored, flavored sugars, and often paired with a dipping sauce. We often say “we still love the original best” yet end up buying one of the newest and craziest sounding churro options.

The Contenders

The Jack-Jack Cookie Num Num
The Butterscotch Beignet

The Jack-Jack Cookie Num Num and the Seasonal Beignet flavors are on our list of “contenders” for being considered new classics. The Jack-Jack Cookie Num Num is a hot and gooey chocolate chip cookie (almost like a deep dish cookie). Break it in half and you’ll see that ooey gooey goodness. The Seasonal beignets are also on our list of contenders. I loved the recent Butterscotch Beignets and one of the most popular treats at Halloween time is the Pumpkin Spice Beignets. Do you agree with our short list of new classics? Is there anything you would add to the list? In any case, we think these eats and treats are on the rise and will be here for the long haul.
